Letcombe Bassett really is a unique and charming village community. Nestled at the foot of The Downs, just a few miles south west of the market town of Wantage. Jonathan Swift stayed at the Old rectory and Arabella's cottage is featured in Hardy's Jude the Obscure. Better still, three Grand National Winners were trained in the village by Capt Tim Forster.

A fascinating insight into the village can be gained by Googling, "Shall Letcombe Bassett Die?" and this will bring up a short 1948 Pathe News film telling the tale of how 'the powers that be' threatened to close down the village not long after the second world war. One gent in the film still lives in the village to this day.

Directions

From Wantage take the B4507 towards Ashbury and after about 2.5 miles turn left at the Childrey Holloway crossroads towards Lambourn and after 0.5 mile keep straight on to Letcombe Bassett as the road turns right to Lambourn. On entering the village, Holborn House is the first property on your left at the top of the hill.
